John Flynn died from suspected ptomaine poisoning on 12 August 1905.

When he left home the previous morning, he took some cheese with him and at dinner time ate some fish and for tea he had pig's head, cabbage and potatoes.

However, during the night he became very ill.

An open verdict was returned with the workhouse doctor saying that his illness might have been caused by ptomaine poisoning.
